Student Lets: How To Make A Rented House A Home
Student House

We understand just how difficult it can be to make a house a home when you do not own the property. Depending on the agreement with your letting agent or landlord, you may be limited on what you can and cannot do to the property.

But fear not – it can be easier than you think to personalise your property and really make a house a home (at very little cost, too!) So let’s get started…

Student Hacks: How To Make A Rented House A Home

Experiment With Colour

One of the easiest ways to personalise your home is to experiment with colour. Renting a property often means that you don’t get the opportunity to choose the permanent fixtures and fittings. For example: flooring and window fittings, so experimenting with colour where you can is enough to inject a new lease of life into your place at a relatively low and super easy price.

Top tip: Opt for a fresh transitional colour on the walls (neutral tones work best!) and then paint your skirting boards and door frames with a feature colour.

Opt For Free Standing Furniture

A rented home can sometimes mean compromising on space, which then leads to a lack of storage, especially if you are house sharing with one or more people. But this is where free standing furniture comes into play. Free standing units will be your new best friend. Whether you wish to store student essentials, out-of-season wardrobe items or your pots and pans to keep them separate to your house mates’, you can move them around and take them with you whenever you move.

Top tip: Bookshelves are a brilliant example of how free standing furniture can incorporate both function and decoration.

Mix Rich Textures

Velvet, faux fur and suede are all examples of rich textured soft furnishings that can instantly give a home a luxury, up-market feel. Whether they be used on cushions, sofa’s, rugs or curtains, it provides an easy and very costly way of making your house a home.

Bring The Outside, In

House plans are another low-cost way of giving your home that personal touch and helping it to look and feel ‘lived in’. Whether you opt for real plants or artificial, there are many different options that are available to choose from. From aloe vera plants, to hanging ivy and bamboo, you can pick them up anywhere from your local garden centre to your local Home Bargains store!

Add Your Own Stamp!

Photoframes, room sprays and monogrammed accessories are a great way to bring your personality and character to your home. Not only are they very affordable, but they are also easy to move around. Whether you wish to display your favourite photographs of your friends from back home if you are moving away for university, or you want your housemates to know what items are yours (for example your favourite coffee mug with your initial on!) or even adding your favourite scent to the place for added home comforts – it’s an instant change that you can make that also doesn’t require any permission from your letting agent or landlord.

Top tip: Just ensure that you opt for room sprays or diffusers over candles (candles are sometimes not allowed in rented properties) and opt for command strips over nails or screws for your photo frames.
